Prescription access liaisons: Flexible support for enhanced patient care
A prescription access liaison (PAL) is a healthcare professional who can perform a variety of roles within the pharmacy, but most importantly bridges the gap between pharmacy care and provider care. PALs can provide interventions and patient care within the pharmacy for high-touch patients and provide direct clinic support.
Integrated care for improved outcomes
This integrated role is flexible, allowing for the liaison to work closely with the clinical pharmacist and provider clinics. PALs work to improve medication access and boost prescription capture, reducing the provider’s burden. When challenges arise, they work with the clinical pharmacist, the provider, and the clinic staff to see that concerns are resolved quickly, creating an integrated care model that puts the patient first.
PALs can support the following:
- Provider clinics: Support provider clinics by working with staff on prior authorization documentation, clinical care programs, medication treatment barriers, and day-to-day challenges.
- Pharmacy: Work directly with patients to set expectations for medications, make refill adherence calls, and connect them to the clinical pharmacist for concerns or side effects.
Complete insurance appeals, test claim adjudication, and help identify patient assistance/medication assistance programs for patients. Provide support for transition care management for patients being discharged. - Payer coordination: Navigate requirements, contact the health plan with questions, and submit documentation.
- Manufacturer hub: Coordinate with the pharmaceutical manufacturer to secure co-pay assistance for the patient when appropriate.
Flexible solutions deliver value
PALs provide a valuable service to health centers and health systems because their role can be customized to meet specific needs. This flexibility allows them to fit into existing workflows and lessen the burden for both the pharmacy and providers.
